Frequently Asked Questions
An Australian partner visa allows the spouse or de facto partner of an Australian citizen, permanent
resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live and work in Australia. It’s designed to facilitate family
reunification by enabling partners to join their loved ones in Australia.
There are different subclasses of partner visas, the main ones are:
Subclass 820 Partner Visa (onshore)
Subclass 309 Partner Visa (offshore)
Subclass 300 Prospective (Fiancé) Marriage Visa (offshore)
An Australian partner visa lets you live with your partner in Australia. It’s sometimes called a de-facto, marriage, or fiancé visa. The Australian partner visa is open to all couples including same sex couples.
After two years from the date of application of a partner visa (820 or 309) you become eligible to submit the Permanent Partner visa which ultimately leads to Permanent Residence (PR).
After the grant of Permanent Residence, the visa holder has the right to stay indefinitely in Australia.
If after 5 years from the date of grant of Permanent Residence (PR) the visa holder wishes to travel in and out of Australia, they either need to obtain a Resident Return Visa or Australian Citizenship.
When the Department of Home Affairs assesses your relationship, they consider what’s known as The Four Pillars of Evidence. These pillars help demonstrate the genuineness and commitment of your relationship. Here’s a breakdown of each pillar and examples of supporting documents you might provide:
1. Financial Aspects of Your Relationship
The Department will assess how you and your partner manage and share financial responsibilities. Relevant documents may include:
• Joint bank account statements
• Wills and estate planning documents
• Joint loans, leases, or financial agreements
2. The Nature of Your Household
This aspect focuses on how you share household duties and responsibilities. You might provide:
• Household bills in both names
• Mail addressed to your shared residence
• Evidence of joint responsibility for children
• Statements outlining how you divide household chores
3. Social Aspects of Your Relationship
The Department wants to see how you present your relationship to the world and whether it’s recognized by others. Supporting documents could include:
• Photos together at events or gatherings
• Statements from friends and family as witnesses
• Invitations to events as a couple
• Records of joint travel and vacations
4. Nature of Your Commitment
This pillar evaluates the level of emotional, physical, and long-term commitment in your relationship. Examples of documents include:
• Personal relationship statements describing the support you provide each other
• Documents naming each other as beneficiaries (e.g., superannuation, wills, life insurance)
• Evidence of long-term plans and shared future goals
• The Department of Home Affairs will review your application as a whole, considering your unique circumstances.
We provide a document to plan and gather your evidence. If you have any additional questions with a Registered Migration Agent to develop a customized plan for your application and ensure you present your relationship in the best possible light.
The partner visa application fee is:

• Other expenses associated with the Partner visa application includes:
• Medical examinations ($350-$450 AUD)
• Police Clearance Certificates ($50-$150 AUD)
